Name

[edit]

Is Pat Rabbitte's surname really O'Coinin in Irish?

Yes, it is actually. Ó Coinín - (O) Cunneen or Rabbit - Co Offaly and of Thomond[1]
Pat Rabbitte is from a Fine Gael background (possible Clann na Talamhain, a FF split in the west of Ireland amongst farmers?). He was originally a Labour member before he joined Official Sinn Féin -or was it Sinn Féin The Workers' Party? -somebody ought to update that portion of his biography.

I believe Rabbitte joined Official Sinn Féin in the mid 1970s while still in the studen movement. It became Sinn Féin the Workers Party in 1977 and was renamed The Workers' Party in 1982. The article said he became involved in politics in 1985 when he was elected to Dublin Co. Council. This is of course nonsense as he had been involved in politics for 10-12 years before that. I'm not sure how this is best done, but there's Creative Commons images of Pat on Labour's own Flickr page - http://www.flickr.com/photos/labourparty/314856929/ is a good one. Might be worth adding to this page and that of the 2007 election? I'm not sure how it's done myself. Gavreilly (talk) 17:26, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
